There’s ample parking.

Family fun with trucks

While you are finding some super bargains on books this Saturday at the Spring Book Sale, the kids can head out back to the DPW vehicle area to get up close and personal with lots of trucks and construction equipment. Here’s a video of a previous Touch a Truck Day in Franklin, Mass:

This is an opportunity you shouldn’t miss . . . it’s loads of fun and it’s free!

Save $100s on books

Don’t spend a lot of money buying books online or at a retail book store. You’ll find thousands of great books dirt cheap at the Friends of the Franklin Library Spring Book Sale this Saturday!

Superb selection of books, DVDs and games

While items available at each Book Sale vary, you’ll find hardcover and paperback books, movies on DVDs and VHS tapes, music CDs, computer games, children’s puzzles and games and a lot more. Books include the classics, current fiction, self-help genre, gardening, etc. Prices range from 50 cents to $1 for most books. You never know what you’ll find at these sales so come early!

Buys on children’s books

My home is full of books, many of them bought for cents on the dollar at the Friends of the Franklin Library Book Sales. We’ve found the selection of children’s books to be fantastic. This has helped us encourage the love of reading in our children.

Here’s just a sample of past buys of children’s books at the previous Book Sales:

We paid $1 for each of these elaborate pop-up books that would likely have sold new for $10 to $15 apiece!

Best selection on Friday

If you want to get an early crack at the best selection, come to the members-only preview Friday, May 17 from 4 PM to 7 PM. You can become a member of the Friends by signing up at the door and then you can enter the Members-Only Preview Book Sale. An individual membership costs $15 while a family membership is only $25. Think of the money you’ll save at the Book Sale!

Help a good cause

You can’t beat the prices at the Book Sale! It’s win-win for everyone – you save a load of money on books and support a great cause. Proceeds from the Book Sale enable the Friends to help the Franklin Public Library make more purchases for its collections and hold special events for kids and adults throughout the year. The Friends help the Library maintain its Museum Pass program which is another great service provided by the Franklin Library. It’s nice to see books recycled in the community and wonderful to have the money go to help the Franklin Library. So attend the Book Sale and maybe become a member of the Friends of the Franklin Library, too!

The change of seasons in Massachusetts brings colorful leaves, crisper weather and many opportunities for family fun activities. So if you’re looking for ways to create some lasting autumn memories for the kids, read on!

King Richard’s Faire
235 Main Street
Carver, MA
508-866-5391
King Richard’s Faire
Through October 23, 2011

Celebrating 30 years, this mainstay of fall family fun in Massachusetts recreates a medieval fair in a child-safe setting with plenty of color, fun and excitement. Sample life in this long-ago time as you enjoy exhibitions of jousting, try your skills at archery, axe throwing and other period games and indulge in some fun feasting. There’s a lot for the kids to see and do and it’s fun for adults too!

Witch’s Woods
79 Powers Road,
Westford, MA 01886
978-692-3033
Witch’s Woods
Through October 31, 2011

The Nashoba Valley Ski Area in Westford comes alive (or undead?) with Halloween fun in October. There’s a haunted hayride and some scary walk-throughs, including a spine chilling castle, a morbid mansion and a creepy crypt in “3D”. Parking is free and there are many special events.

A Day in Pompeii
The Museum of Science, Boston
1 Science Park, Boston, MA 02114
617-723-2500
A Day in Pompeii
Through February 12, 2012

What better way to get in the mood for Halloween than to see up close and in person the body casts of victims buried alive during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE? For the less morbid among us, here’s a rare chance to take the kids to experience daily life in an affluent Roman town as it was at the vibrant height of the Empire.

Edaville USA

Parents throughout the Bay State can breathe a sigh of relief: Edaville has resumed operation! Beloved by generations of children, the train-themed special events park in Carver, MA has a full schedule for Fall 2011 and the 2011-2012 Holiday season.

One of the many nice things about living in Franklin, MA is its strategic location on Route 495 south of the Mass Pike and north of Route 95. That puts Franklin in the heart of a culturally thriving and highly diverse population hub: the community is roughly equidistant to the cities of Boston (26 miles), Worcester (28 miles) and Providence, RI (26 miles).

It’s easy for Franklin residents to enjoy all the flourishing cultural and entertainment resources available in the region. And during the Holidays, that’s a real benefit for families with children of all ages!

Holiday Fun video

Here’s a video of a visit my family made to Edaville USA in Carver, MA; we went to see the Edaville’s annual Holiday Festival of Lights:

Edaville is about 40 miles from Franklin; we made the drive in about 40 minutes.

The opportunity to create some wonderful childhood memories during an easy day trip to Edaville is just one of many benefits of living in eastern Massachusetts and the Town of Franklin!
