This put Franklin High among the top 30 percent of all high schools in the Commonwealth.

Boston Magazine ranked Franklin HS much higher

Interestingly, Boston Magazine ranked Franklin High School much higher than 90th in the state when it issued its own survey of MA public high schools last October.

Boston Magazine judged Franklin High to be in the top 50 public high schools in the Commonwealth!  As I noted in my comments last October on the Boston Magazine school survey:

In placing forty-seventh in the survey, Franklin High was ranked on par with or better than such excellent public high schools serving Mansfield, Walpole, Natick and the regional high school serving Norfolk, Wrentham and Plainville (King Philip Regional).  Yet, as noted in a post published here a few years ago, Franklin, MA has a much lower property tax burden than most other I-495 communities with such excellent schools.

Why the disparity in the rankings?

The spread between rankings of 47th and 90th is very wide, especially for surveys completed within 6 months of each other!  Perhaps the different evaluations of Franklin High School in Franklin, MA is due to a local versus a national focus in the competing surveys. 

Boston Magazine looks only at high schools in Massachusetts while the US News and World Report organization purports to evaluate ALL public high schools in the US.

In describing its 2019 high school rankings, US News and World Report revealed that it used an all-new methodology to evaluate an over eightfold increase in the number of high schools surveyed (23,000 schools in 2019, compared to only 2,700 the previous year).  That’s a huge leap in coverage coupled with use of previously untested analytic tools, a combination that may very well expose the 2019 results to unintended error and distortion.

In producing the rankings, Boston Magazine says it looked at many factors, including SAT and MCAS scores, Advanced Placement participation rates, class size, and student-to-teacher ratios.   (Schools on or within the I-495 loop were included in the findings.  Excluded from the rankings were charter schools and specialized schools.)  You can see the full Massachusetts public high school rankings posted by Boston Magazine in the hotlink at left.

Presented by members of the school’s Science National Honor Society, the event is designed to give elementary and middle school children hands-on exposure to fundamental scientific principles.  The goal of the event is to spark kids’ interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education and encourage them to pursue careers in the sciences.

The formal dedication ceremonies were held September 21 after the school had an open house for the public the day before.

Construction took a remarkably short 2 years because the complex was built under the cost-and-time-saving Massachusetts Model School Program.

$100M+ High School is state of the art

Total costs for Franklin’s beautiful new High School exceeded $100 million.

The High School is gorgeous!  Its three levels contain over 82,000 square feet of academic space. There is a 17,000+square foot gymnasium, 800 seat auditorium, state of the art media center, fully equipped science labs and loads of cutting edge technology.

Video of Media Center at Franklin High

Not a lot of books

There are some stacks in the Media Center with print materials. But given the intensive use of high tech throughout the school, the focus in the Media Center is on technology and computer-based education.  Just like the Genius Bars in Apple Stores, the Media Center has a tech support station (manned by students) to help students get the most out of all the technology at their disposal at the school.  And as often found in college media centers, a café where students can buy refreshments as they work.

The days of students going to the school library to use print materials in physical stacks are long gone!

Video of gymnasium at the Franklin High School in Franklin, Mass

The interior of the 17,700 square foot gymnasium huge!  The gym is designed to make the greatest use of space possible and allow a broad range of uses.

The structure houses two regulation sized basketball courts which can be subdivided into up to five small spaces for practice and informal activities. Bleachers retract into the walls when not is use.

The 6,000-square-foot indoor walking track on the second level of the gym is a nice extra feature!

With seating for 80, the hall accommodates traditional lectures and also employs NEC Display interactive white board technology.

The NEC Display software syncs with the Chromebooks provided by the school to every student, allowing teachers and students to share and collaborate on content in real time and on the Cloud.  The technology integrated into this large, beautiful space (as it is throughout the High School) helps assure that the Large Group Seminar will play an important role in shaping students’ educational success at Franklin High.

The Large Group Seminar at the Franklin High School in Franklin, MA feels very much like a high end university lecture hall.  What a great asset for Franklin High!

With the capacity to seat over 800, an orchestra pit and advanced lighting and acoustic technologies, it’s more of a professional theater than the old fashioned high school meeting-hall-with-a-stage!

A local bio-tech company paid for extra lab equipment in each room in an effort to help the school increase the science skills of  graduating student.  The labs can be adjusted to meet the varying instructional demands of environmental science, biology, chemistry and physics.

NEC Displays in every classroom

The amount of technology evident at the new Franklin High School is truly impressive.  Each classroom has wi-fi and uses a NEC Display interactive white board.

These sync with the Chromebooks each student has been issued by the school.

The Display’s software is a collaboration platform allowing teachers and students to present, work together on and share content in real time during class or anytime via stored content on the Cloud. Sure beats an overhead projector!

Computers and technology everywhere

There’s a lot of cutting edge technology evident throughout the Franklin High School.  The school has 13 high tech science labs furnished with devices and equipment worthy of colleges and universities.  A local bio-tech company paid to beef up the outfitting of each lab.

From music editing to robotics, computers and high tech are everywhere at Franklin High.  The Media Center is a technological hub at the school.   There’s even a 4,200 square foot broadcast studio with state-of-the-art equipment in both video and sound editing rooms.

Curriculum reflects tech edge offered by school

Franklin High School employs all this technology to help students learn and to have them become proficient with the cutting edge technologies they will be using in their future work lives.

This is pretty heady stuff for a high school out on I-495.  But Franklin’s been making a name for itself in so many ways over the last 20 years.  So why not now in secondary education!
