[post_content] => Franklin, MA celebrated the upcoming start of construction of the new Franklin High School with a ground breaking ceremony held earlier this week at the site of the new school.
Beautiful day for the ground breaking ceremony
A warm fall sun shone from beautiful blue skies . . .
as shovels full of dirt were tossed and . . .
the Franklin High Lyricals and Pep Band performed for onlookers.
Video of events
Speeches were made by a number of politicians, the chairs of both the school board and school building committee, and the executive director of the state School Building Authority.
Here is a video of some of the day’s events, including some of the notable comments presented by Tom Mercer, the chair of the Franklin School Building Committee:
Highlights of the new High School
Construction will begin later this month with occupancy of the 306,543 gross square foot facility scheduled for Fall 2014.
With a designated enrollment of 1,650 students, the school will cost approximately $86.7 million. Franklin’s share of the cost is projected to be approximately $47 million with Massachusetts picking up the rest of the tab – quite a bargain for Franklin!
The facility will be home to state-of-the-art instructional labs that will accommodate all the major sciences including chemistry, physics and biology. The deplorable science labs at the current high school presented an especially compelling reason to approve the new school.
Coupled with the labs will be innovative long-term science and research project rooms designed to enhance instruction and encourage collaborative learning.
There will also be a beautiful 800+ seat auditorium, bringing with it significant upgrades to and expansion of practice and storage space for drama, band and choral programs.
The new high school in Franklin, MA was very much needed and will be an educational showpiece for the town for years to come!

[post_content] => Voters in Franklin, MA have overwhelmingly approved construction of the much-needed new Franklin High School. In a town-wide vote held today, residents approved a $47 million debt exclusion to fund the town’s share of the estimated $104.5 million cost of the gorgeous new facility.
Ready in 2014
The new school will be ready for occupancy August 2014.
The facility will be located near the current high school which eventually will be torn down.
Beautiful complex
The facility will be a fully furnished and equipped 21st century high school. In addition to the school, there will be an 830-seat auditorium/theater
and a 17,700-square-foot gym with 6,000-square-feet-indoor walking track.
Construction is slated to start in the fall 2012.
Replaces worn-out school complex
The existing High School is approximately 40 years old and in deplorable shape. Building the new school was a true no-brainer!
This vote is a major plus for Franklin and is something all town residents should be very proud of!

[post_content] => The public tour at the Franklin, MA High School held this week was a real eye opener. The public got to tour science and computer labs as well as classrooms. They also got a behind the scenes look at locker rooms and administrative and mechanical system areas.
Eye opening views
Conditions in some areas of the facility are barely acceptable while many aspects of the physical plant are outright deplorable!
I left with a strong sense of outrage that anyone could oppose replacing this antiquated relic from the 1970s after seeing what I saw during the tour.
Chemistry and computer labs outdated
The chemistry lab was upsetting: decayed, dilapidated, depressing!
It would seem impossible to teach high school chemistry in such abysmal conditions.
Computer labs marginal
The computer equipment is very dated.
Updating seems difficult due to inadequate wiring.
Many other areas of the facility show debilitation due to age and use.
Mechanical systems are decrepit and roofs leak.
Videos of public tour
Here's a video gallery of conditions at the Franklin, MA High School:

These videos should give you ample grounds for grave concerns about the High School!

[post_content] => The electrifying results of the special election to fill Massachusetts’ vacant US Senatorial seat certainly dominated national news on January 20, 2010.
Whatever your political beliefs, you will most likely agree that the upset victory by Republican Scott Brown in such a heavily Democratic state was a watershed event.
Strong Views
The election seemed to galvanize voters in Franklin, MA.
Expressed feelings ran strongly in favor of both the Democratic and Republican candidates in the days leading up to the vote.
Heavy Turnout
Despite cold and snowy weather, voter turnout was very high.
In Franklin, 68 percent of registered voters cast ballots Tuesday.
Voting took place at the Franklin High School Field House on Oak Street in Franklin, Massachusetts.
Summary of local election coverage
Here’s a link to another Franklin blog’s post that collects links to local news coverage of the election published during and immediately after the voting.
As of the writing of this post, no details are available yet on Franklin vote totals for each candidate. Tallies for the town overall and by precinct should be published in coming days.
Let’s hope that both parties and all elected officials will work cooperatively together in 2010 to solve the many challenges facing Massachusetts and the entire country.
